"THE TELLER"

"THE TELLER"

"He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names"-Psalms 147:4

How great is our Lord, who telleth the number of the stars.  As man sends out his cameras to discover new stars, the Lord watches with perfect knowledge of their number and placement.  I have heard of people who have attempted to count the stars but all attempts have been in vain.  Only He who created them knows that number.  Surely, this contrast should provide a glimpse of God's knowledge and wisdom compared to man's .  As man vainly tries to discover every nook and cranny of the universe, the Lord knows it as well as we know the pocket on our shirt.  It is a vain attempt for man to dethrone the Lord.  Yet, that is what he tries to do when man says that the Lord did not create the universe.  This one verse should show how silly man is as he makes such statements.  Today, we will ask those who advocate this idea of evolution to tell us how many stars there are in the sky.  We do not want an estimate, we want perfect knowledge.  Then, tell us the secret of every star.  Tell us the gasses, the molecules, the atoms and every chemical reaction that brought about its being.  Only the Great Teller has this knowledge.  As we gaze into the vast expanse of the sky we gain some insight into the greatness of our Lord and His beautiful majesty.

Yet, with all this knowledge, beauty and majesty we find something that is equally wonderful.  We also find a personal Lord: "He calleth them all by their names."  I love this thought for it reveals the loving character of our Lord.  The gods of the heathen, the gods that man has made up in his own mind might be depicted as strong and powerful, but the One and Only true God is the one who has named every individual star.  As a boy might name the marbles in his bag or a girl her dolls, the Lord places names on those twinkling orbs in the sky.  Perhaps the way they twinkle gives them their peculiar name or the placement they have in the sky.  Whatever it is, it will be wonderful to know when we get to glory.

Yet, there is more to this telling, this naming than just stars.  Surely, this is written for the encouragement of His people.  If the Lord knows every star, if He has a name for each one, surely He knows His people and has a special, caring, loving name for each one. These names of His people are continually before His eye, as the prophet has said, "Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me"-Isaiah 49:16.  Whatever the Lord stretches forth His hands to accomplish, His people are continually before His eyes.

It also tells us that heaven is going to be a big place……that Jesus got more than the devil. The Lord told Abraham, "And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed"-Genesis 26:4.  This promise must have been in the Psalmist mind as he wrote of the Lord telling the stars.  It embraces all nations, all tongues, all families and all people of the earth.  It is a sad attempt for man give a number of those going to heaven.  We should ask them to number the stars in the sky if they attempt to do so.  It is just as vain for man to point out who is going to heaven.  Though we might have some idea by their twinkle, only the Lord can look upon the heart!  I am thankful all of this is in the hands of a merciful "Teller".  Man would either make it too small and only include his particular click of religion, or make it too big and take in the devil himself.

The great "Teller" knows all, created all and will one day Tell the secrets of the universe to His own.  Today, let us rejoice in our Lord who "Telleth the number of the stars."

Come and worship with us at Harmony Primitive Baptist Church.  Singing begins at 10:30 each Sunday morning followed by preaching at 11:00.

By His mercy and grace, Neil Phelan, Jr.,  Pastor.
